OOMify

A utility for injecting memory allocation failures.

Error handling is notoriously hard to test, especially for C code. OOMify helps by causing malloc() and related functions to fail in a controlled way, with the help of LD_PRELOAD. Currently, OOMify targets Linux systems with glibc, but it could be extended to others.

Installation

It is easiest to use OOMify by building and installing it system-wide:

$ make
$ sudo make install
$ oomify ...

To use it without installing it, you'll need to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH so the injected library can be found:

$ make
$ export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$PWD
$ ./oomify ...

Usage

oomify [-a|-n N] [-f] [-s] [-v|-q] [--] PROGRAM [ARGS...]

  -a
      Try failing all allocations the program preforms (default)
  -n N
      Run the program once, failing the Nth allocation
  -d
      Do a dry run, without failing any allocations
  -f
      Fail all subsequent allocation after the first one fails
  -s
      Raise SIGSTOP on failing allocations, to allow attaching a debugger
  -v
      Be verbose
  -q
      Be quiet

In its default mode of operation, OOMify

  1. Runs the program once to count the number of allocations it performs:

    $ oomify bfs >/dev/null
    oomify: bfs did 2311 allocations
    ...
    
  2. Runs the program that many times, injecting a failure at each separate allocation:

    ...

If you uncover a bug, OOMify can zero in on it to help you debug it. Let's look at allocation 1486, which corresponds with the munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer error. We'll pass -n1486 to fail that specific allocation, and -s to automatically raise SIGSTOP so we can attach a debugger before the crash:

Here we've seen that if the strdup() on line 187 fails, we end up freeing an invalid pointer on line 271. This happens because that particular error path skips over the initialization of ent->gr_mem. We can fix the bug by moving the initialization earlier:
