OpenNews - A Paywall-Killing Chrome Extension

"Democracy dies behind paywalls."

Banner

A dead simple chrome extension that helps make navigating the web easier! This extension removes intruding paywalls and other annoyances in your browsing experience.

Why is this better than other extensions?

OpenNews is much faster and efficient than other extensions. Furthermore, OpenNews' method for blocking is versatile and works on many sites, even those not tested before.

Installation

From GitHub (auto-updating)

  1. Download the latest .crx file from the Releases Page. Ensure the file is in your default Download directory.
  2. Navigate to chrome://extensions on your browser.
  3. Turn on Developer Mode.
  4. Simply, drag and drop.
  5. Enjoy!
  6. The extension should automagically update, but you can also manually update by clicking the Update button on the Extensions page chrome://extensions.

From the Chrome Store

  1. Download the Chrome Extension From the Chrome Web Store
  2. Enjoy
As of December 1st, 2018 the Google Chrome team has removed this extension from the store. Hopefully it will be back up soon. Till that time, the best solution is to install the extension using the method shared down below.

Tested Websites (others work too):

Plus many other sites...

New Site Requests

Please open a new issue request and follow the template! Not all websites are doable since they may behind a hard paywall.

Troubleshooting

  • This extension works best alongside uBlock Origin and uBlock Origin Extra.
  • If a site doesn't work, try turning off uBlock and refreshing. If that doesn't work, try toggling the extension and manually checking for updates to ensure you are on the latest version of OpenNews.
  • If none of these work, you can submit an issue here.
