However, as of my last knowledge update in January 2022, NGINX does not have native capabilities for handling mail protocols such as SMTP or IMAP. NGINX is primarily designed for HTTP and HTTPS protocols.

For mail proxy functionality, you would typically use a dedicated mail server software such as Postfix, Exim, or Microsoft Exchange. These mail servers are specifically designed to handle email traffic and implement protocols like SMTP and IMAP.

If you are looking to configure NGINX to act as a reverse proxy for an email server, you might consider using NGINX for handling SSL termination, load balancing, or forwarding requests to a backend mail server. Here is a simple example of how you might configure NGINX as a reverse proxy for an IMAP server:
