In 2022/23 international students made up more than 5% of the total U.S. higher education population (more than 1 million people), with the total number of students enrolled in the US in 2022/23 being 20 million. The USA has the world's largest international student population, with more than 1,000,000 students choosing to relocate to the United States for their education (source).
