Leaving the PR here for future reference
The migration was unfortunately too lossy in terms of design detail and UX and would take significant effort do to safely.
For now I think it is best to focus on delivering v3

The performance seemed to improve visibly and the vendor bundle dropped by nearly 300kb
We could pick this up in future after v3 is released as a performance improvement
