Since similar to the issue below, it also took some time for me to find out and was confusing, adding the explicit docs to the --latest option.

Fixes #8767

Also mentioned in #6963

Thanks for opening this!

A few things jump out to me about this. Firstly, I think we should add something to the Example section that includes --latest=false. Secondly, any changes we apply to release create we should also apply to release edit.

From what I can understand, the default behavior is NOT to set it as latest but the release edit --latest flag sets it to do so, right?

Oh yeh, I think you're right that we probably don't need to do that then!

@williammartin

Actually it's a little more nuanced for release edit. What actually happens is that if the release is already published then omitting --latest makes no difference. If however, you are moving a release from draft to published with --draft=false (also very annoying) then it has the same behaviour as release create.

One other question though, this usage string says (default [automatic based on date and version]) but I don't think that's correct. Omitting latest means we don't set the mark_latest param :

if opts.IsLatest != nil {
// valid values: true/false/legacy
params["make_latest"] = fmt.Sprintf("%v", *opts.IsLatest)
}

And according to the REST docs, that defaults to true rather than legacy as implied by the usage: https://docs.github.com/en/rest/releases/releases?apiVersion=2022-11-28#create-a-release

Could you confirm that you read this the same as me? To me it just looks like the usage is incorrect and there's no way to ever set legacy through the CLI.

  1. for release edit this is what I understand:
    a. already published release: the default is to NOT mark it as latest. If you want to do so, you need to explicitly pass --latest.
    b. draft release: you can't set it to latest anyway. However if moving from draft to published with --draft=false, then the behavior is a release create.

  2. for release create my understanding is the same as you. You're right that you can't ever set it to legacy because --latest is a Bool. Plus, the description is the docs is incorrect as the default is true instead of legacy.

I don't know why it's named as such but legacy feels to be a default option to me, instead of true. Namingwise, It's more auto than legacy but I don't have the context in that. The release edit part can be edited to properly describe the behavior but the create behavior needs to be decided IMO.

I agree with you with a minor clarification here:

a. already published release: the default is to NOT mark it as latest. If you want to do so, you need to explicitly pass --latest.

I think the behaviour is to keep whatever the current status with regards to latest. If you are editing the latest release it will remain latest, if you are editing a non-latest release it will remain non-latest.

I don't know why it's named as such but legacy feels to be a default option to me, instead of true

The API defaults to true and by omitting make_latest (which is what happens when we don't set --latest, --latest=true or --latest=false) that's the behaviour we get by default in the CLI. I think the current help text is simple incorrect when it says (default [automatic based on date and version]). Do you agree?

We also cannot change the default behaviour as it would be a breaking change. If we wanted to support legacy then we be better to introduce a new flag that supports values true/false/legacy as options, but that is out of scope for this in my mind.

I would suggest that we update the help text of create --latest to say: Releases are created as latest by default. Set to false to not mark this release as latest. Clearly this would be better as a different flag but we're kind of stuck with it for the moment.

I then think we should update the Long descriptions (especially for edit) to make it clear what the behaviour actually is. I'm happy to do this in a follow up PR though if you don't want to here.

Alrıght then I will:

  1. Update the create docs to reflect the current behavior
  2. Have a look at the edit docs to see if I can explain it, otherwise leave it to you
  3. Open an issue regarding the impossibility of passing latest to the create cmd.

Sounds good?

Do you mean legacy?

Otherwise sounds great to me!

Since this issue mentions gh release create --latest=false, I want to raise awareness that this doesn't work currently. The API docs suggest that setting {"make_latest: "false"} should work, and this is what gh does. But the setting is ineffective and releases are marked latest anyway. Tested by using curl directly and also by ensuring gh does in fact set this param.

I've raised a ticket (2774557) about this.

@williammartin interesting. I just re-tried my test-cases and it does indeed work. Perhaps this was a temporary hickup in the GitHub API or they already fixed the issue.

That's possible. Very suspicious! In either case thank you for reporting here in case anyone else runs into it.

### [`v2.3.0`](https://togithub.com/fluxcd/flux2/releases/tag/v2.3.0)

[Compare
Source](https://togithub.com/fluxcd/flux2/compare/v2.2.3...v2.3.0)

##### Highlights

Flux v2.3.0 is a feature release. Users are encouraged to upgrade for
the best experience.

For a compressive overview of new features and API changes included in
this release, please refer to the [Announcing Flux 2.3 GA blog
post](https://fluxcd.io/blog/2024/05/flux-v2.3.0/).

This release marks the General Availability (GA) of Flux Helm features
and APIs, including helm-controller, the `HelmRelease`, `HelmChart`, and
`HelmRepository` APIs.

The `HelmRepository` v2 API comes with new features, such as the ability
to reference Helm charts from `OCIRepository` sources, reuse existing
`HelmChart` resources, and verify the integrity of Helm chart artifacts
signed with Notary Notation.

❤️ Big thanks to all the Flux contributors that helped us with this
release!

##### Kubernetes compatibility

This release is compatible with the following Kubernetes versions:

| Kubernetes version | Minimum required |
|--------------------|------------------|
| `v1.28`            | `>= 1.28.0`      |
| `v1.29`            | `>= 1.29.0`      |
| `v1.30`            | `>= 1.30.0`      |

> \[!NOTE]
> Note that the Flux project offers support only for the latest three
minor versions of Kubernetes.
> Backwards compatibility with older versions of Kubernetes and
OpenShift is offered by vendors such as
> [ControlPlane](https://control-plane.io/enterprise-for-flux-cd/) that
provide enterprise support for Flux.

##### API changes

##### HelmRelease v2

The [HelmRelease](https://fluxcd.io/flux/components/helm/helmreleases/)

The v2 API is backwards compatible with v2beta2, with the exception of
the deprecated fields which have been removed.

Removed fields:

- `.spec.chart.spec.valuesFile` replaced by
`.spec.chart.spec.valuesFiles`.
- `.spec.postRenderers.kustomize.patchesJson6902` replaced by
`.spec.postRenderers.kustomize.patches`.
- `.spec.postRenderers.kustomize.patchesStrategicMerge` replaced by
`.spec.postRenderers.kustomize.patches`.
- `.status.lastAppliedRevision` replaced by
`.status.history.chartVersion`.

New fields:

- `.spec.chartRef` allows referencing chart artifacts from
`OCIRepository` and `HelmChart` objects.
- `.spec.chart.spec.ignoreMissingValuesFiles` allows ignoring missing
values files instead of failing to reconcile.

##### HelmChart v1

The [HelmChart](https://fluxcd.io/flux/components/source/helmcharts/)
kind was promoted from v1beta2 to v1 (GA).

The v1 API is backwards compatible with v1beta2, with the exception of
