device rotation noticeably animates annotations

I noticed this first with user location annotations, but it applies to all. When the device is rotated, annotations quickly jump in position, then animate back into place (effectively) as the map center readjusts.

Took a look around and tried some things, but can't seem to figure out why. Any ideas?
