What is Near Infinity?

Near Infinity (or short: NI) is an open source browser and editor for resources of Infinity Engine games, such as Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale or Planescape Torment. It has been written in Java and can therefore be used on any platform supported by Java, which includes Windows, macOS and Linux. The source code is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License.

Features Overview

Near Infinity can be used to browse through all available resource types supported by the Infinity Engine. It also provides editing capabilities for the majority of resource types.

In addition to viewing and editing game resources Near Infinity provides options for converting selected resource types into various target formats, searching for resources in various ways and checking game resources for inconsistencies or errors.

Near Infinity and all of its features are platform independent and can therefore be used on Windows, macOS, as well as on every other platform supported by Java.

Near Infinity is still being actively developed. To keep it up to date you can make use of the Update Check feature.

Requirements

Near Infinity can be downloaded as prepackaged installation file which doesn't require additional software to run the application. Installers for Windows and PKG archives for macOS can be downloaded directly from the Near Infinity Releases section on GitHub.

A Linux version is available as Flatpak image and can be downloaded from the Flathub website or installed through the package manager of your choice. See Flatpak Quick Setup for more information.

The prepackaged installers will also add start menu and/or desktop shortcuts and associate the chitin.key file of the games with Near Infinity (Windows and Linux versions only).

Alternatively, you can download Near Infinity as a Java JAR file which doesn't have to be installed. However, a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is required to run Near Infinity in this case. It is highly recommended to install the 64-bit version of the JRE if your operating system supports it, as some features of Near Infinity require a lot of system or video memory.

Download Java:

  • OpenJDK (recommended)
    • Choose package type 'JRE' for your operating system and architecture. Any available Java version can be used. Accept the preselected version if you're unsure.
  • Oracle's Java
