Pitch

In version 25 the post statistics display (favourites & boosts) was altered to make the positioning more consistent, resulting in the counts always being displayed even when no interactions were present.

I would like an option to revert this to the old behaviour, or at least not display the stats line for posts with no interactions (0/0). A "hide qualitative stats line on posts with no boosts or favourites" toggle would be sufficient, although my personal preference would be a "always show all qualitative metrics on posts" toggle that, when disabled, causes a complete rollback to the pre-v25 behaviour of only showing counts for interaction types that exist (in a nonzero amount) on that post.

Motivation

The new style of stats display has some downsides:

  • I can no longer quickly scan past a post and visually identify whether it had any interactions. With the old "inconsistent" display it was clear when a post had no interactions, just one type, or both types, simply by the presence (or not) and size of the text. I didn't need to look at the numbers much.
  • The numbers zero and eight are the same rough size and shape so I find myself reading the numbers more frequently to check whether it has interactions. The fact that the numbers are bold doesn't help in this regard, as it now draws the eye even when there isn't anything to show.
  • Displaying 0 / 0 next to every post feels kinda... idk, judgemental? negative? in a way that the prior implementation did not. It feels less healthy to browse past posts with lots of zeroes next to them, at least, especially when the implementation draws my eye to those numbers more than it used to.

I don't want to turn off stats altogether. I find the numbers useful, when they are relevant to the interactions the post does have, but the new always-on metrics display is a fairly major regression for me. While I'm sure it was intended to provide a cleaner UI, that minor improvement in visual consistency ends up feeling, at least to me, like a net negative user experience.

I also would like this! I find the "0 boosts, 0 favourites" dialog to be unnecessary noise, and agree with all the other reasons mentioned.
