Redirect download to a memory buffer

I am wondering if there was a way to redirect the download to a memory buffer instead of outputting the data to a file. In my use case, I would like to download and immediately upload the audio to an external server. Being able to handle downloaded data as a buffer removes the need to manage files in a file system. Is this possible?
