I recently installed powerline. After setting the font in my terminal (Hyper), I noticed that the font would render improperly if it wasn't the 'primary' font in the list of font families, and the little arrows would shrink and move around. The issue persisted across different fonts and to varying degrees. Maybe it's something to do with Hyper and having multiple fonts, I'm pretty new to this stuff, thought I might as well bring up the issue.
