Agreed. The focus on turning github into more of a 'feed' social media while de-emphasizing the activity that is happening to my own repos to the point where the activity gets hidden in the noise is terrible and a huge regression to the previous setting |

I don't agree with the tone of the opening post, but I'd have to agree with some of its message. First of all, great job on trying to change things for the better. Standing still is easy. Being progressive can be more effort and temporarily less appreciated. Personally I tried the "For you" tab regularly, but lately it's been more of a once per week thing, when I consciously am looking to explore. What I do not like about the combined feed are two things:
If those two things could be solved I think this new way is actually nicer than it was before. |

There is nothing to be improved if it stays an 'algorithmic timeline', and a lot of other people just want the chronologic timeline back. You try to 'add nuance' to something that's not relevant here. Again, consider opening your own discussion. In there, you are also free to decide the tone you prefer. |

I agree 100% about not wanting an algorithmic timeline. One of my biggest gripes about algorithmic timelines is they are not deterministic, so you cannot revisit them and see the same information. That kind of thing may be great for keeping people on-site so you get great impressions, but that is completely at odds with productivity apps where we need to get actual work done. I want a chronological feed of information that I have selected as important enough to be given my attention. |

Absolutely, I completely agree with you. The new GitHub feed has been quite frustrating to use. It feels like they're moving away from what made GitHub great in the first place – a platform for developers to collaborate on code. Hopefully, they'll listen to the community's feedback and give us the option to switch back to the old feed. |

The new page makes this view completely useless for me. The reduction in value for me cannot be understated. I get zero value from the new view. What makes this view particularly useless is that it appears that all information about repos that I have starred is showing up here. I don't want to see that information. It does not seem that I can filter the feed to show only people I follow, which is all I care to see. If this isn't changed to allow me to not see every action from repos that I have starred, I'm either going to quit using this altogether, or I am going to remove all my stars. Either way value is being destroyed. EDIT 1: as pointed out below, one workaround is to visit https://github.com/dashboard-feed which shows the old feed, albeit in a horribly styled view. I guess this is my new home page until they make the default home page useful. @davidldennison this isn't a UI change. A UI change would be if they reorganized existing features, or restyled the pages. Replacing one feature with another is not a UI change, it is a feature change. |

This new feed is terrible, none of the filters seem to work for my own account stats, instead it shows content based on others. I can no longer see who has starred or forked my repos, which I use to determine what projects I should continue to work on. Where did this change come from? I didn't hear anything about it. I was on this morning then come back this afternoon and it changed. |

They actually made an attempt about 10 months ago (I remember because I tweeted about it, then enabled it for everyone. Luckily, it got reverted quickly which I hope they do again. And then they hopefully just stop touching it. |

I highly doubt that UI designers drove this decision. It looks suspiciously like an attempt to drive "engagement", which is the wheelhouse of business consultants and upper management. |

this is so bad. i'm not seeing any starring activity from people i'm following, which is the main thing i use the feed to monitor. this was one of my most valuable signals for keeping up with new projects and now it's just turned to shit for no reason. |

Yup, after filtering out just the stuff relevant to me all I see is two items. Whereas the /dashboard-feed shows dozens and dozens of additional events. 🤷 |

I agree. I used to check my feed frequently as it pertained only to my projects, now it is full of noise about starred projects and just useless. Please bring back the old feed or at least provide an option to restore prior behavior. |

This change makes me somewhat concerned that Github does not realize that its primary userbase is developers who, first and foremost, wish to know about activity in projects that they develop. This isn't Facebook for code, this is a place where I do actual work. |

Indeed. It's clear on all sides that this change is not built by people who actually use this - or at least not use it as most of us complaining about it. I also don't understand why they don't leave the option to switch between the two. They are free to experiment but give other people the option to use something that actually adds value. |

Yea I mean… if they were ramping up some ad impressions or engagement/visit time etc. for marketing income, I'd get that. But, honestly, with this change… my visits are not longer/deeper, now I have to skip the feed altogether and just use inbox notifications to go directly where I need to, without any browsing about. Not sure if this is the intended outcome for a "visibility" feed project;D |

Holy cow the new feed is awful. I want literally none of the things it does, I'm not on Github to discover content like the banner says and the feed is now full of garbage that's useless and completely irrelevant to me. If nothing else please please get updates about my starred repos out of the feed. If I wanted to see updates from those projects I would watch them instead. This seems like it was built with a complete misunderstanding of who uses Github. |

If you give me the ability to filter the feed, at least add an option to see commits and co of repositories I contribute to, which is what I used the main feed for prior. This way we can toggle off all the stuff we don't want and can keep what we used to like. I don't understand how this happened again, we had a feed like this before and everybody disliked it, and now it was brought back with filter options, but still omitting the things we actually want to see on this page. |

That. Don't force me to "watch" something I just "starred". When I want/need to watch it, i'd watch it instead of starring. OTOH the dashboard feed as the first thing I want to see on GH is centered around my content. For commercial projects this might be events around orgs/repos owned, for oss devs the importance might be on people/stars/forks… but this random feed breaks all update flows I can think of. With filters not able to get former content, or just simply displaying empty results;D In all cases, this has to be fixed permanent timeline that stays the same between reloads in properly chronological order! |

I agree with this, please at least give an option to have it just show activity on repos I'm watching like it was before. It was super useful to know if someone starred or forked a repo or followed me. |

Indeed. In addition, it's very useful to have a feed that's ordered by time, so you can check it out until you recognize something you saw the last time and go back to what you were doing. In this 'For You' feed it's totally random and loses all the functionality. |

It's frustrating when platforms like GitHub force changes that users don't want or need. This new algorithmic feed does seem unnecessary, and it's valid to be concerned about the direction they're taking. Let's hope the GitHub team listens to the community and reevaluates this decision. |

yeah, I hate it. took way to long to figure out how to get rid of "trending crap", which I dont care about. its called "Recommendations", and of course they put it at the very bottom of the filters, because they dont want you to remove it. then when I unchecked it, I lost EVERYTHING that I used to see before, in regards to history of people starring my repos. |

my feed has been showing me the same two posts about people starring some of my repos at the top of the page for over two weeks. The old page was full of activity while this one sits dormant while claiming to be an improvement |

At least there is that filter now (didnt notice it earlier?) I'd still need separate filter for Forked (i dont want to see those) and Created repos (i want to see those). ps. the feed is still ugly compared to old one though. |

It's been weeks and the feed is still utterly broken. The "Follow" function doesn't seem to do anything anymore, all the commits I want to see are completely gone, and releases are only visible because I starred those repositories, even though most of those releases are ones I do not care about because I intentionally did not follow those repositories. |

I am trying really, really hard to resist the incentive that the new feed is giving us to un-star everything in order to cut down the noise. I think as long as dashboard-feed exists I can resist it, but once that is gone, I don't think I'll have another choice if I want a feed that is valuable to me. It's tragic that they have conflated the "star" feature and the "follow" feature. If anybody knows of a tool that backs up GH starred repos and lets you restore them, please link it. I would like to play around with what the feed would look like if I got rid of all my stars. It would also be a great tool for folks to use as a statement against this decision. I can imagine a tool where once you add a star, a repo in your account runs a GH workflow, adds the linked repo to a markdown file formatted like an awesome-list, and then removes the star from your account. |

I am here once again because https://github.com/dashboard-feed is no longer functioning for me. The updated feed does not address my concerns. I cannot filter certain events for only my repositories. For example, if I want to only see repository activity of my repositories, I will automatically get repository activity of "recommended" repositories, which are usually repositories I do not have any interest in. There is still information that is completely missing, which was very valuable. Changes made to the wiki on my repositories are not being shown, making it impossible for me to verify if these are legitimate are vandalism. Furthermore, forks of my repositories are also not being shown. This post has the second highest amount of upvotes across all of the feedback posts on all your products. How many more are needed before you start taking the feedback seriously? |

Mine was completely empty, although it is now showing one star I have gotten on my project recently. Everything before that is still missing (currently that star is the only thing I see), so I'm not entirely certain what's going on. I'm hoping it will just continue working from now and I didn't miss anything important. |

GitHub has posted a follow-up update about the homepage feed today: https://github.blog/changelog/2023-11-27-improvements-to-the-homepage-feed/ Unfortunately, this is still not addressing the primary complaint: I want to see commits, merges, issues, and pull requests from my coworkers in the repositories that I follow. That is all I want to see. When I turn on "Repository activity" and turn off "Include events from starred repositories" I still see a bunch of months-old cards about pull requests opened by people I follow on random repositories, but nothing more recent from my coworkers on the repositories that I have marked as watching. This new feed remains an active hindrance to me trying to get work done. |

For me it seems better, it was mainly filled with activity on my repositories. But it still doesn't contain everything. I still don't see it when people for my repository, for example, and I still need to see wiki edits. |

This whole saga of Github mostly ignoring the 2nd most upvoted thread in the history of the feedback forum is so frustrating and exhausting. I recently re-watched Cory Doctorow's DEF CON 31 talk and this GH feed saga resonated a lot. |

Seems like they're running surveys on the old dashboard feed now. This could either mean that they're planning on bringing back some of the old functionality to the homepage feed (that's good) or that they're going to change and possibly break the dashboard feed (very, very bad). |

The survey is about the feed you get on https://github.com/orgs/[your_org]/dashboard. Is that really the good dashboard feed? I would need to have an active organisation with the userscript temporarily disabled. |

I think the survey is probably meant to raise awareness that there is a per-org feed, and to solicit feedback. I actually didn't know that my org had a dashboard, but when I looked at it, it was just as noisy as the new default feed, and all the useful information was hidden among noise. |

I totally agree about the new feed—it's not working for a lot of us. Let's keep pushing GitHub to give us the option to switch back to the old one. Your updates on GitHub and HackerNews are getting noticed, so let's keep at it. Hopefully, with enough visibility, GitHub will listen. |

The new feed is horrible and you know it.
Please give us the option to go back to the old feed.
You made an attempt, but you failed. Now please go back and focus on something that actually adds value. You are trying to fix something that's not broken.
It's evident that the people building this crap are not the ones who actually use it. It would be great if you would listen to your users.
