All brew commands spawn infinite processes

Today, brew update “Updated Homebrew from 485f73a32 to 8a3561ec4.” Ever since that, any brew command I run never completes, and continuously spawns infinite processes, specifically these three over and over:

/bin/bash /usr/lusers/jacktose/.linuxbrew/bin/brew
/bin/bash /usr/lusers/jacktose/.linuxbrew/bin/brew
/bin/bash /data/shared/lusers/jacktose/.linuxbrew/Homebrew/Library/Homebrew/shims/scm/git -C /data/shared/lusers/jacktose/.linuxbrew/Homebrew describe --tags --dirty --abbrev=7

Here's a gist of the CLI and the processes as listed by top and ps ux.

I've searched a bit, but I don't think this is the same as Linuxbrew/brew#600, Homebrew/brew#6671, or #710, because they could all run at least some brew commands.

Any ideas how to fix this without a full reinstall? Any possibility this is a real bug introduced between 485f73a32 and 8a3561ec4?

I was able to run it as HOMEBREW_DEVELOPER=1 HOMEBREW_GIT_PATH=/usr/local/bin/git brew update-reset, thanks to @Bo89's suggestion. Results are in the gist. By my read, it worked, but didn't fix the problem.

Just to make sure nothing was changed in your Homebrew setup, what's the output of git -C $(brew --repo) status -v?

Some -- flags are handled differently so that they run quicker and don't actually launch ruby. --repo is one of them.

It's a lot of output, but HOMEBREW_NO_ENV_FILTERING=1 bash -x /usr/lusers/jacktose/.linuxbrew/bin/brew --help might help identify the loop.

Haven't tried brewed git yet—hopefully today.

If you can hold off on that for a bit, there's a PR for a similar problem on macOS (Homebrew/brew#10763), so it would be good if you could wait for it to be merged, then HOMEBREW_DEVELOPER=1 HOMEBREW_GIT_PATH=/usr/local/bin/git brew update-reset and try running brew commands normally.

As mentioned by @Bo98, I do use HOMEBREW_NO_ENV_FILTERING (because of this old issue, which maybe it's time to revisit).

Here's a summary, for the sake of an “answer” post. Thanks to all the helpful responders below!

Homebrew/brew#10595 caused Homebrew/brew#10762, this weird infinite loop condition that was triggered when HOMEBREW_NO_ENV_FILTERING was set.
Homebrew/brew#10763 backed out #10595, fixing #10762.

Meanwhile, I've learned I shouldn't be using HOMEBREW_NO_ENV_FILTERING, so I opened Homebrew/brew#10776 to work on that.
