I've checked in homebrew-cask and I found this discussion:
Homebrew/homebrew-cask#131883
Somehow it appears that 2.8.1 is available in homebrew but "brew upgrade avidemux" tells me that I'm already running the latest version. And when I start avidemux 2.7.4 it immediately offers to upgrade to 2.8.0 (not 2.8.1).
