Description of issue

We used rpmspec on macOS which is installed as part of the rpm bundle. Version 4.18.1 worked fine.

However the new version 4.19.0 simply dropped macOS support and made the bundle linux only as a minor version change:
Homebrew/homebrew-core@3b38c7f

It is also no longer possible to install the old version:

❯ brew install [email protected]
Warning: No available formula with the name "[email protected]".
==> Searching for similarly named formulae and casks...
Error: No formulae or casks found for [email protected].

So this change makes any one who didn't have the previous version installed unable to get rpm on macOS.

Any suggestions to get an old version installed somehow?

Correction, the rpm developers dropped macOS support. This is simply a result of that. If you have a personal tap you can use brew extract to extract earlier versions of software to it

Please see rpm-software-management/rpm#2222 (comment) where RPM maintainer indicated that maintaining macOS support is not planned. As discussed in Homebrew/homebrew-core#144033, with the switch from Autotools to CMake, it no longer seems possible to build RPM without extensive patching.

As mentioned by @SMillerDev, brew extract can help you install an old version of RPM (and other formulae). Something like this may work:

brew tap-new $username/$tap_name
brew extract --version=4.18.1 rpm $username/$tap_name
brew install $username/$tap_name/[email protected]

Set $username to your username (pfiaux), and tap_name to whatever you want to name your personal tap. Please also note that you are expected to fix the build errors you encounter, if any.

As suggested by the error message, please do brew tap homebrew/core. If it still doesn't work, try export HOMEBREW_NO_INSTALL_FROM_API=1.

As suggested by the error message, please do brew tap homebrew/core. If it still doesn't work, try export HOMEBREW_NO_INSTALL_FROM_API=1.

This worked for me too. To summarize:

brew extract --version=4.18.1 rpm $USER/rpm-tap

Adjust how often this is run with HOMEBREW_AUTO_UPDATE_SECS or disable with
HOMEBREW_NO_AUTO_UPDATE. Hide these hints with HOMEBREW_NO_ENV_HINTS (see `man brew`).

FYI @bhagujava (and everyone in this thread):

rpm is available on macOS again. This was made possible by @lionelfleury in Homebrew/homebrew-core#162455. So, you can now install homebrew/core/rpm normally on macOS.

If you don't need the extracted rpm anymore, it can be removed now. If you want to remove the tap too, run brew untap $YOUR_TAP.

@ZhongRuoyu I'm trying to understand more about what changed in 4.19, because the rationale from rpm-software-management/rpm#2222 (comment) was around missing POSIX features in MacOS (which have since been added). Now it sounds like there's a different issue, where upstream has removed conditionals that made it possible to build in anything except Linux? If you remember, can you point to an example that we used to rely on before 4.18?

There may be some room for discussion upstream here, since this situation doesn't seem to match with https://github.com/rpm-software-management/rpm/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md#portability

Thanks! I tracked down the PRs for two of those changes, and opened up rpm-software-management/rpm#2807 to clarify the upstream situation.

It sounds like the Homebrew team has basically given up on trying to build rpm for macOS

That seems like a misrepresentation of the messages here that very clearly point to: "upstream does not want to support it"

Sorry, I didn't mean to misrepresent anything! I just mentioned that particular fact since it's a real consequence that might affect their response. My only goal is to get an answer of "just kidding, we actually will support macOS, as long as it's POSIX compliant now."

When I read rpm-software-management/rpm#2222 (comment) I can't ignore the context of macOS missing a standard POSIX function. That's very different situation from now, where a bunch of Linux-specific code has crept into the codebase. And besides that, maybe they'll just change their mind. 🙂

In rpm-software-management/rpm#2222 I asked somebody with macOS to look into it whether that's the only thing. That there was zero feedback, in a year.

The rpm upstream development team has no means to test or support macOS. If the macOS community wants to see macOS supported, they need to step up to do that work. That work starts with communicating with us. The three cases mentioned here are silly portability rot that would've been easy to fix any time if somebody had just reported them to us.

FWIW, all three issues are addressed in rpm-software-management/rpm#2812 now that @markdascher did report them (thanks for that!), none of it macOS specific.

After some additional fine-tuning, the fixes were just merged today. So the next upcoming rpm release (4.19.1.1) will build on macOS. If there's any trouble getting it to work, see this comment for the exact commands I used to test it.

Thanks again for those examples @ZhongRuoyu! That really helped get the ball rolling here. (And as you guessed, we did find some more stuff after fixing those three.)
