Which project type are you referring to? Have you tried out the ruler? When combined with the guides that the selection tool has, you can easily measure stuff.

Can you describe why it's necessary? It will help me get a better understanding of how important a feature it is.

Another question: could the guides that are visible when the selection tool is active be used instead of a grid? That's a feature that already exists, so I could make a setting that, when enabled, always renders the guides.

huh just a grid to see the pixels easier u could add setting say yes or no if u want and u could make a setting for the question u asked

That's why I asked about the guides that are visible when the selection tool is active - it might be good enough for what you're after, and it would be a lot easier to add a setting for that than adding new functionality.

Why wouldn't the rulers work?

personally I like the grid a-lot more than ruler
