Is it possible to change border colour of specific countries using updateChoropleth?

Sorry I'm a real novice at D3. I'm doing a project where I want different countries to be highlighted on a choropleth as I scroll past different headers in a parallel column of text. I planned to do this by changing the colour of the country's border and possibly even making it wider, exactly what happens when highlightOnHover is activated really. I am using waypoints to create the spots where the different countries should be highlighted and I was hoping to use the updateChoropleth function to change the border styling but this doesn't seem possible. I would be extremely grateful for any assistance
