When I need to reinstall Windows on my gaming PC, here's the list of things I need to do before and after the reinstall.

This is a minimal list that's a subset of #51

Follow the "Clean install of Windows 10 using installation media" section of these instructions to do a full wipe and reinstall of Windows.

When installing Windows, unplug from ethernet and tell the installer you "don't have internet" to disable a lot of dumb privacy-invading features; turn off ALL check boxes when it asks you which data you want it to have access to

Make the user account "Jesse Millar" so configurations work after reinstall.

Back Up

  • Cura (C:\Users\Jesse Millar\AppData\Roaming\cura and manually back up in Cura cloud)
  • Fanalab (manually export profiles and update screenshots in comment below)
  • FanControl (C:\Users\Jesse Millar\Documents\FanControl)
  • Final Fantasy XIV (back up launcher settings and the contents of C:\Users\Jesse Millar\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn)
  • FreeCAD (C:\Users\Jesse Millar\AppData\Roaming\FreeCAD)
  • Home directory dotfiles/config (C:\Users\Jesse Millar)
  • iRacing (C:\Users\Jesse Millar\Documents\iRacing)
  • NZXT CAM (C:\Users\Jesse Millar\AppData\Roaming\NZXT CAM)
    • Fan curves (update screenshots in comment below)

    • Disable and rename various sound devices for desk and sim rig (Settings > System > Sound > Sound Control Panel then right click each monitor and "Test" to figure out which one is correct for my desk speakers; disable the rest and then rename for clarity)
    • Uninstall Skype and OneDrive (and any other bloatware)
    • Wallpaper
    • Turn off "Enhance pointer precision"
    • Change desk monitors to 144hz
    • Change sim rig monitors to 144hz
    • High performance power plan
    • Disable stupid Windows notifications (Settings > System > Notifications > Uncheck last three boxes)
    • Set accent color
    • Disable transparency effects
    • Set account avatar
    • Disable all features of the lock screen
    • Lock screen wallpaper
    • Configure clock timezone and week start day
    • Turn off Xbox Game Bar (Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar)
    • Disable unwanted startup apps
    • Unpin everything from start menu

Close down as many apps as possible when playing iRacing to conserve RAM and prevent memory swapping.
