Hi,
I don‘t know how the sidenote mark (in the margin column) is formatted in Tufte‘s books, but I‘d like to suggest to change it in the tufte class: There is actually no good reason for making the number of a footnote a superscript, be it in the margin column or in the foot. When using normal footnotes in other classes I set it in normalsize, bold and with a small but distinct gap between it and the text, as suggested by another well-known typographer, Hans Peter Willberg. In the tufte class I wouldn‘t set the number bold, maybe.
