Advice for "lifecycle" #571
Comments
Another option might be to update our current guidance to the two-word form, which conforms to Merriam-Webster. Or wait to see what the Word Nerds determine. |
My preference would be to retain "lifecycle" as one word, and allow an exception of two words for any product names that require it, and to review the guidance if Word Nerds makes a definitive decision. IBM also defines "lifecycle" as one word. |
June 2024 update: Word Nerds has decided to adopt "lifecycle" as one word. |
From @rclee33:
The RHT style guide says to write "lifecycle" as one word (https://stylepedia.net/style/6.2/#l). However, several product names use the 2-word form: "Red Hat Enterprise Linux Extended Life Cycle Support Add-On". To avoid possible confusion, I'm wondering whether we should add a sentence to the Style Guide entry about the exceptions in product names.
Julian:
I think a suitable approach here would be to use one word by default, but two words if referring to a product name that writes it that way.
Word Nerds has an open item about how to write the term, and has not yet made a decision. You can see their notes here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10uOb9Psvh4LWatH-B3raiSwbBsO_4tMFiQkfbedxMmk/edit#heading=h.jmpvkofa6wr
