Legislative Document Style Guide

Document Structure

  1. Metadata: Begin the document with metadata information, including the title, jurisdiction, date, and other relevant details.

    Using our renderer, the document will be rendered with this metadata displayed providing extra information to the reader! Repelled or amended documents will display a link to the new versions based on the optional metadata.

  2. Preamble: Start with a preamble section, providing context, purpose, and any relevant background information.

  3. Sections and Articles: Structure the document into sections, articles, and sub-subsections as necessary. Use numbered headings for clear hierarchy.

  4. Text Formatting: Use Markdown for text formatting (e.g., bold, italics) to emphasize key points or definitions.

    • Italics: *Italic text*

Legislative Elements

  1. Definitions: Define key terms in a dedicated section, typically at the beginning of the document. This should be the first section.

  2. Enumerations and Lists: Use numbered or bulleted lists for specifying items or points in the legislation.

  3. Citations: Cite relevant statutes, regulations, or other legal documents when necessary. Use a consistent citation style.

  4. References: Provide references to related legislation or documents.

  5. Amendments: Create a new document to mark any amendments to existing legislation. Use the contents of the existing legislation but add your amendments where necessary. Add some optional metadata to the first document:

Modify absolute/path/to/new/file to the absolute location (based of the repository root) of the new document based on relative paths. Remember do not include file extensions!

Formatting Guidelines

  1. Language: Use clear and concise British like English language. Avoid ambiguity and legalese when possible.

  2. Consistency: Maintain a consistent style for headings, lists, and citations throughout the document.

  3. Spacing: Use a single blank line between sections for readability.
