So, I have the ICOM IC-756 with a broken display. My idea is to use an arduino board and implement what you did here. But I need some basic guidance. Some questions:

  • In the schematic, the P1 CI-V is the 3.5mm jack right?
  • Then, I have to use the USB connector in the arduino to plug it to a PC right?
  • Once is plugged to the PC, the arduino code will allow me to use RS-BA1 or Ham Radio Deluxe? What model do you actually pick in those clients?

Thanks, it would be very nice to have some sort of display for this radio.

Hi mxdlx,

P1 is indeed the 3,5 mm jack CI-V. USB from PC to Arduino, that is also correct. Once plugged in, you can use RS-BA1. As far I can remember I had the 756 choosen. RS-BA1 does send the tx commando, despite the model.
Ham Radio Deluxe does not work (at the moment). I have been made aware by ON7WP. Apparantly HRD needs an ACK when the TX command has been issued. I'm planning to look at it in the future.

Maybe it is better to build a standard CI-V interface with less hassle like this one : http://www.plicht.de/ekki/civ/civ-sch2.html
I use the DTR as the PTT (with transistor), this works with HRD. You still need a RS232<->USB adapter.

I appreciate your reply so much. I just bought a built CI-V cable but I'm willing to learn from your code. Once again, thank you very much for your comment.
