Add mypy type checks

Hi there.
Thank you very much for contributing to the project.

I noticed that the code has some type checking, but not all of it does. I'm happy to try and improve this by adding it everywhere, as well as adding a check in the ci that ensures proper type checking. Let me know if this is something you would approve of.
