Leaving a Team

  • The Hard Thing About Hard Things: When a Manager Decides to Quit - by Dennis Nerush. Takeaway: Builds on the "shields down" metaphor used by Michael Lopp (see later entry in this list) and provides some detailed steps and actions to take as a manager resigning.

  • Is It Normal to Get Incredibly, Irrationally Nervous About Telling Your Boss You’re Quitting? - by Alison Green (Ask a Manager). Takeaway: Still a useful read even if, as a manager, you've handled others' resignations! Describes the sources of anxiety around giving notice and provides a reminder of how this anxiety can hold us back or do damage.

  • Shields Down - by Michael Lopp (Rands). Takeaway: Describes the slippery slope to your resignation (using the metaphor of having your "shields down"), including his reflections on what a leader can do to lead to this. Includes ten questions folks may use to evaluate their current role.

Setting Your Direct Reports Up for Success

  • Manager Handoffs - by Lara Hogan. Takeaway: Detailed description of a 1:1:1 meeting between a direct report and their past and future managers, creating a transparent and informative handoff.

  • The Manager Handoff Worksheet - by Steve Wozniak. Takeaway: Builds on the meeting described in the previous article and provides a template for coordinating the info when transitioning direct reports.
