Apple Feedback Assistant ID: FB13631148

DESCRIBE THE BUG:
When importing ProResRAW footage from an A7SIII, shot in S-Log3/S-Gamut3.cine, Final Cut will automatically apply a camera LUT.

It will set the „S-Log3/S-Gamut3“ LUT as the camera LUT, however it should apply the „S-Log3/S-Gamut3.cine“ LUT as the camera LUT.

TO REPRODUCE:
Import S-Log3/S-Gamut3.cine footage in ProRes RAW in Final Cut, and see which LUT get's selected as the camera LUT.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR:
Choose the correct LUT based on the metadata in the file.

SPECS:

  • 2023 Mac Studi (M2 Pro, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD)
  • macOS Sonoma 14.3.1
  • Final Cut Pro 10.7.1

I see this with Sony A7SIII ProRes RAW recorded on an Atomos Ninja V, firmware 10.67.1, FCP 10.6.5 on Sonoma 14.3.1, yet I'm confident it did not happen in 10.6.5 on then-contemporaneous versions of MacOS. This might indicate it's an issue with Pro Video Formats, which is upgraded as part of MacOS. A binary diff of the 2.3 vs 2.2.4 of the AppleProResRAWCodec shows significant changes.

The exact behavior of ProRes RAW in FCP is dependent on camera, camera firmware, Atomos recorder model and firmware. If possible, please post here the firmware version of your Ninja V. You can obtain the firmware version used to record the ProRes RAW file using MediaInfo or Invisor.

There are some issues with ProRes RAW from certain camera/recorder combinations which cause black clips in 10.7.1. I am investigating that. I don't currently think it's related.

ProRes RAW does not actually have a color profile -- it only stores the camera color profile as metadata. Then the RAW decoder identifies that, and by default, it should show S-Log3/SGamut3.cine in the FCP RAW controls, which then enables FCP to auto-select that camera LUT. Apparently, the RAW decoder is misidentifying the color space, which then causes FCP to apply the wrong camera LUT.

That is a somewhat hidden aspect of this problem. Even if you change the camera LUT to S-Log3/SGamut3.cine, the RAW controls in Inspector are still using the wrong conversion. Unlike the LUT which can be bulk updated for many clips, the RAW-to-log setting will still be wrong. It's not a huge difference but it's a color error.

This also happens with FX6 ProRes RAW material recorded on both Ninja V and Shogun 7. It does not happen with S-Log3/SGamut3.cine 10-bit 4:2:2 XAVC-I MXF material from the FX6.

As you discovered on my thread in the Apple forums, mainly related to the 12800 ISO issue, my firmware was quite outdated with it being on 10.62.

I'm currently away and can't check, but if you'd like to have more information about the clips with the issues, I understand that you already downloaded them from the link I provided over there.

I'm trying to wrap my head around it a bit more over the weekend, testing more with different settings in camera and with the latest firmware on all the devices, to get a deeper dive and provide more information. This might very well be an issue with the old Ninja firmware, but I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
