Apple Feedback Assistant ID: FB13515702

DESCRIBE THE BUG:
Strange FCP Issue. I usually have a working Library where I edit and finalise the project. Once it’s completed, I create a new empty event in a different Library (have different libraries for different type of events) and drag over just the project file into the new event in a different Library. When asked what to copy, I chose only Original Media. This usually copies only the files used in that event and not all the unused roll footage and voiceovers. I then deleted the project from the working library.

In this case, I did this a few days ago but now had to make a few more changes to the project, which I made on the working library, (on a fas NVME as I hadn’t deleted the event there yet.

So after I finalised the changes, I did the following

  1. I deleted the whole (now outdated) event in the backup library
  2. Created a new Event
  3. Copied the latest version of the Project file over to the new event in BackUp Library again
  4. Ticked only transfer original media

However, this transfer only took a few seconds, and when going into the new Event in the backup Library, the event is there and is playing, but only a very few original media files are present in the new event, while it should be many dozens.

The event plays ok, but if I click on some of the clips in the timeline and show them in the browser, the whole project is de-selected, and no file shows up. (see video)

In this case, both Libraries are on the same Raid and it seems like FCP references to the other library instead of as being asked to copy all original media.

My fear is that if I delete the file in Library One in the working Library, I will get missing files in my backup/archive Library.

Hope this makes sense and does not seem to be the intended behaviour of FCP 10.7.1

TO REPRODUCE:
follow steps above

EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR:
All original media files used in the original project should be copied to the new event

So been on the phone with Apple and the issue can be easily reproduced.

  1. Have two separate Libraries A and B on a same external drive (in my case OWC Raid)
  2. Create a new Event in Library B copy all project files from the event in Library A into a new event, and select copy only the original media
  3. This will copy the projects and all related original media
  4. Delete the newly created event in Libary B again (in my case, because I again made changes to the same event in Library A) and wanted an updated backup.
  5. FCP will tell you that all files are moved to the trash. I waited till all background tasks were completed but did not empty the trash. Interestingly, the trash at this stage is empty it seems like FCP is deferring moving the event to the trash to some later stage (no indication of that at all in FCP)
  6. Create a new Event in Library B and again copy all projects from the Original Event in Library A
  7. FCP will not copy the original media in the new event in Library B but only the project and a few files. The project in the new library will play fine (See the previous video), but if you ask FCP to show files in the browser, they can't be found.
  8. I opened the project a day later to show Apple, and by then, FCP realised the files were actually deleted and showed all the missing media.

I reproduced the issue again with Apple by doing the same once more, so it's not a one-off

It seems like FCP is deferring actually removing the files, and FCP still thinks the files are present in the Libary, so if you repeat the same steps (even with a different event name), Apple does not copy all original media again because it hasn't updated that the files are deleted. At some time later, not minutes, likely rather hours, the files are actually deleted, and you end up with all media missing. If that was your backup procedure (which it is for me) and delete the original files because you think everything is copied, you lose all your original media. Not happy Apple

I'll pass on to FCP Team.

FCP Support ask me to reproduce once more and screen record and explain whole issue (after they reproduced it with me before via screen sharing) this is a 12m video https://drive.google.com/file/d/18IADJ662CDcpkRmNnvsyvf9GPOdc3O1f/view?usp=sharing

10.7.2 still has issues, and Apple Photo integration does not work. It's super annoying; is Apple looking into that? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dHetPIXJ3C8wDbPZQRFJvQQhgkoJc1n4/view?usp=sharing
