Breaking up into smaller libs?

Testing the waters with this idea.

When building this library on the conda-forge CI machines, the Windows builds intermittently run out of memory. I think that breaking up the library into smaller individual libraries would help solve this issue.

I don't know if this possible.
I don't know if there are performance implications to doing so.
I also don't know where this would be broken down - per module, per toolkit, etc.?

I fully acknowledge that this is a "tail wagging the dog" situation!
